Y para inaugurar el nuevo sello de Oregón ‘Old Wave’, nuevo disco de Guidance Counselor, el tercero de los de Oregón, primero en una discográfica, también relacionados con Starfucker, y una revisión del synthpop-electro-new wave, están muy bien los 2 discos, con un sonido y estilos similares. Estan muy bien.
With donations from friends and plenty of borrowing, Anderson and drummer Keil Corcoran (who has since been replaced by Andy Parker in Guidance Counselor’s latest live lineup) were able to remake the entire lost album, and the extra time spent planning and recording led to tracks that sound infinitely better than their original incarnations. The band re-recorded its drum tracks at Audible Alchemy with producer Jacob Portrait, who was drawn to the rawness of the demo material, and mixed parts of the record at the Dandy Warhols’ studio/home base, the Odditorium. The resulting record masterfully mixes up-tempo, poppy dance music with gnarly beats and blasts of ugly post-punk noise.
Opening with the declaration “I Don’t Wanna Think”—which takes the stupid fun of an LCD Soundsystem screed to a Portland house show—and finishing with its sister track “I Don’t Wanna Speak,” the record deconstructs punk rock instrument by instrument. Guitars are rarely used as the foundation here; instead, Anderson’s playing is used to texture and color songs built using squelchy keyboards, driving bass and Corcoran’s fantastic drumming. Yet, despite relying so much on rhythm, 24-year-old Anderson—with his strawberry blonde hair and mustache—admits he discovered dance music late in the game.
