For a new band to really strike a note with the music buying public, timing is crucial. Doncaster quartet Neon Plastix have chosen bravely (or foolishly if you prefer) to ignore this golden rule by releasing ‘Awesome Moves’ – an album of tracks written around 2006.
Sadly, in 2010 the nu-rave has lost it’s day-glo, and the party is well and truly over. Consequently the disco beats, new wave basslines and gaudy dancefloor synths which fill this record are so out of step with modern times, the band may as well start ranting about the miner’s strike. Of course, this would matter a lot less if ‘Awesome Moves’ contained half the fiendish wit and invention of say, Klaxons’ ‘Myths of the Near Future’ or Late of the Pier’s ‘Fantasy Black Channel’. Unfortunately, it does not.
That isn’t to say the album is completely devoid of merit. ‘On Fire’ is a genuine indie-dance floorfiller with a pumping bassline and an ace shout-along pop chorus. ‘Gentlemens Gold’ is similarly anthemic, begging the question of why Neon Plastix didn’t get a release when they were playing packed clubs four years ago.
Elsewhere however, too much of this record sounds like a budget Arctic Monkeys with added retro synths and none of the wry lyrical observations or musical dexterity. The proverbial biscuit is finally taken come the arrival of ‘Neon Invasion’, which pretty much sounds as its title would suggest, proving that ‘Awesome Moves’ is stuck in a time- warp. (Artrocker)
